Broadsides: Presentation

The layout of Broadsides has changed a lot over time, there was’t a typical or strict presentational decorum that was followed. They varied based on publishers, crime and narratives of the convicts. Broadsides had to be gripping due to the nature of the sale therefore, the importance of an interesting picture, short title and the text was layout had to hook the readers.

The Sentences, and Sorrowful Lamentation of a Young Women, Aged Nineteen

In this broadside the readers will be, initially, drawn to the image across the top of the page; as it was popular literature for ordinary people. The picture is extremely encapsulating as there is lots going on. The readers attention may be drawn to the breastfeeding mother in the prison, the man covering his face, the women lying on the floor or the children playing. A lot of confusion may arise from viewing this single image. Something to bear in mind is the reusing of images for different broadsides therefore, it should be understood that this image may not be completely applicable for the context of this broadside. The text is separated by a pattern down the middle, so by blocking off the text it instantly becomes more appealing to the reader. Another reason it is separated is because there are more than one multiple sentences in this broadside, which is not something largely done. This becomes more desirable as people are then getting more for their money.
